Dr. Jayanthi Abraham, is Associate Professor at Microbial Biotechnology Laboratory VIT University, Vellore India. She is interested in working with isolation of pesticide degrading microbes from vegetables and crops cultivated agricultural soil; soil which has been exposed to pesticide contamination. Wide range of unusual microbes have been isolated and employed in bioremediation of pesticides such as Chlopyrifos, Malathion, Monocrotophos, Endosulfan, Prophenophos and Cypermethrin. She also has experience in working with isolation and characterization of microbes from various effluents: Textile mill wastewater, Pharmaceutical waste water, Tanner effluent, sugar mill effluent and degradation of diesel. Another area of research she has been exploring recently is isolation, characterization of bioactive compounds from natural sources with antimicrobials towards drug resistant strains, anticancer compounds with cytotoxic effect against human carcinoma cell lines. Currently, in her lab work is in progress in isolation of compounds from bacteria belonging to the Phylum Actinobactera, Fungus and Peptides with antimicrobial potential from pulses. The effective compounds thus, obtained are being validated with bioinformatics tools including AutoDock 4.0, iGemDock and Simulation studies. She has also experience in biosynthesis of nanoparticles and their effect on clinical pathogens.
