Dr. Gopal P. Sinha has been a distinguished visiting professor at IIT Kharagpur. He superannuated from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India, as Director on November 1s,t, 2009. Born on 17th July 1946.he did his B.Sc. (Engineering) in Mechanical stream in 1967, from Bhagalpur University, obtained his MBA from XLRI in 1975 and then Ph.D. (Engineering) from IIT, Kharagpur in 1983.He had trainining abroad in US Steel ,Pittsburgh, USA, Wharton School Pennysylvania, USA and MIT, Boston, USA.
Thirty one years of Industrial Experience:
Joining TATA STEEL in 1970 as an Industrial Engineer he attained the position of Head, Operations Research, formulating Business Plans to effect Cost Competitiveness. In 1994, he received the Franz Edelman Award* for the best OR/MS work in the world, jointly from The Institute of Management Science (TIMS) and the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) at Boston, USA. Earlier, in 1993, he received the IFORS (International Federation of Operations Research) award for the best OR work in third world. He received SAIL Gold Medal four times, three in a row, first time in 2000 and then in 2003, 2004 and 2005 for work related to Iron and Steel Industries from the Institution of Engineers (India). He also received the Distinguished Engineer Award from the Institution of Engineers, in 2000.
A Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE), Institution of Engineers (FIE) and Operational Research Society of India (FORSI), he was the Founder President of the Investment Casting Society(ICS). He is also the past National President of ORSI
Publications / Patents: 41 papers, 8 copyrights and 3 patents.
Teaching Experience of over Three decades: An AICTE-INAE Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT, Kharagpur (2001-04),in Industrial Engineering and Management, he has also been teaching as a Visiting Professor, in Visionary Leadership for Manufacturing(VLFM) at IIT, Kanpur, Operations Research at XLRI, Jamshedpur(1992-95), Manufacturing, Robotics, and Engg. Mechanics at I.S.M., Dhanbad(2008-09), Industrial Engineering at RIT / NIT, Jamshedpur (1982-2009), Heat Engines at SIT, Jamshedpur(1976-78) and Under Water Robotics at Defense Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune.
Guided 11 M.Tech. and 5 Ph.D. work.
Initiated the following 8 Postgraduate Research Training Programmes in Engg. for fresh B.E./ B.Tech.s to prepare them as Research Ready Scientists :
Mechatronics, Advanced Semi Conductor Electronics, High Power Micro Wave Devices, Advanced Instrumentation Engineering, Materials Resource Engineering, Advanced Petroleum Sc. and Technology, Engineering Of Structure, Environmental Systems Modeling and optimisation
Developed 10 Technologies:
As Chairman / leader / principal investigator / project-director of several collaborative projects with Institutions like NPC, IIM, IITs, Min. of Earth Sc., Dept. of Sc. & Tech., CMPDI and Dept. of Atomic Energy. As Chairman of the task force on “Developing Capabilities in Adv. Manufacturing Technology”, he led a network of 9 CSIR laboratories and 2 IITs. The task force developed 5 technologies for net shape manufacture of metallic and composite components. Besides, he has been leader of several strategic projects like development of “Krishi Shakti”, the mini tractor for the common farmers of India, ‘Radio Frequency Quadruple (RFQ)” for ion-beam accelerator, robotic projects “All Terrain Robot (ATR)”, “Sub- Terrain Robot” and “Underwater Autonomous vehicle (UAV)”.
He also headed the project “Soleckshaw”, for the development of solar power assisted cycle rickshaw, for reducing drudgery and creating employment for millions in a societal mission, mode.
Served as Member of the Research Council of Central Scientific and Instruments Organization, Natonal Aerospace Laboratories, Structural Engineering Research Centre, Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, and the National Metallurgical Laboratory.
