Dr. Betigül Öngen is a professor in the department of Medical Microbiology, İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, İstanbul University. She completed her residency program in Medical Microbiology at the same faculty in 1988 and received her PhD in Microbiology from Institute of Health Sciences, İstanbul University in 1993. She worked as a researcher in the Department of Parasitology and Mycology in Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris-France in 1992 with the scholarship of Turkish Society of Microbiology. And also in 1995 by gaining the scholarship of Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) she worked in the Department of Bacteriology and Virology in Kremlin-Bicetre Hospital, Paris.
Dr. Öngen has had graduate and postgraduate students continuously for 21 years. She has authored and co-authored various scientific articles, abstracts, and chapters in publications in the clinical microbiology field.
Her areas of special interest in research include medical bacteriology, gastrointestinal pathogens and antibiotic resistance. She is a member of various national and international scientific associations and professional organizations.
