Abstract

Introduction Retrospective analysis of congenital inguinal hernia treated with Open Herniotomy (OH) or Laparoscopic Herniotomy(LH) was done to see if  Laparoscopic herniotomy is as good as open cut down herniotomy.

Material and Method All congenital inguinal hernia case operated between Oct, 2014 and Oct, 2018 in GB Pant Hospital Port Blair were analysed. Patients were grouped into OH and LH groups.

Results 113 children with 128 hernias were operated. There were 99 male and 14 female patients. The age ranged from 7 days to 16 years. The mean Operating time for unilateral OH was 28.13 minutes; for unilateral LH 29.64 minutes; bilateral OH took 44.18minutes and bilateral LH took 34 minutes. Metachronous hernia was seen in 7 children.

Conclusion LH in trained hands is a safe and acceptable technique with added advantage of reduced operating time in bilateral cases.
