Abstract

Nepeta coerulescens Maximis is a traditional Tibetan medicine that showing many favourable bioactivities. The present study was aimed to extract the major chemical constituents of Nepeta coerulescens Maxim and investigate the anti-HSV-1 activities of the major chemical constituents. The solvents ethyl acetate, petroleum ether, n-butyl alcohol, 50% ethyl alcohol and water were used for the preparation of extracts from Nepeta coerulescens Maximis. Among them, ethyl acetate extracts showed the best antiviral activity. Further, allagic acid, gallic acid, ?-sitosterol, quercetin and rutin were isolated from ethyl acetate extracts using various chromatogram columns and identified though HPLC/ESI–MS techniques. The toxicities and antiviral activities of allagic acid, gallic acid, ?-sitosterol, quercetin and rutin were further evaluated, and gallic acid showed maximum antiviral activity than other chemical constituents. The results of this study confirmed the activity of Nepeta coerulescens Maximis against HSV-1 and it may be source for the discovery of novel antiviral compounds.

Keywords
